Purpose:
To provide the client with the skills and tools necessary to create an overarching framework for planning and managing an integrated set of projects based on achieving rapid results and maximum return on investment.

Course Description:
This practical, skill-building program is geared for program managers and senior project managers who are responsible for coordinating a set of projects that have strategic importance to their organization. It is not a PM-fundamentals course nor is it a survey of conventional project management skills and tools. Rather, the emphasis is on the “business side” of project management, including how to make fact-based decisions about the projects that are funded and supported, how to create and foster a project culture that works to achieve rapid outcomes, and how to work within the organization to break down communications barriers and create relationships that are vital to the project environment. The training is conducted in a 1-day workshop but the option for follow-on training and consultation is also available. The outline that follows provides a list of suggested topics, but the course can be customized to emphasize topics of primary interest to the client.

Course Outline:

What special skills and tools are necessary to succeed as a strategic project manager?
Understanding how executives make decisions and providing them with the information they need
Creating an alignment-map to link a project portfolio to the strategic objectives of the organization
Creating a simple but useful master plan for the organization’s project portfolio
Collecting and analyzing cost-benefit data to support project-selection decisions
Making ROI-based decisions regarding the funding, support, and scheduling of individual projects
Managing priorities and conflicting demands for resources
Creating and fostering a culture that values and knows how to deliver rapid project results
Establishing benchmarks and criteria for making go-no-go project decisions
How to coordinate multiple projects while avoiding inefficient “multitasking mania”
What it means to be a “project leader” and how this differs from a being project manager
Tools and special considerations for managing virtual projects and distributed project teams
The strategic program manager’s role as the communicator-in-chief, and what this means in practical terms
